Taylor Townsend and Belinda Bencic meet in the third round of the 2019 tennis Charleston Open.

Taylor Townsend is coming off a straight sets win over Julia Goerges that took 23 games to decide. In the victory, Townsend won 67 percent of her first serve points and 64 percent of her second serve points. Townsend won 66 percent of her total service points and converted on both of her break points. It was the first time Townsend has ever beaten a top-20 player in her career, as she was 0-13 previously. There’s no denying this is one of the better performances we’ve seen from Townsend yet on the main tour. Townsend has a chance to win three matches in a single tournament since winning the ITF title in Charleston last year. Townsend has won five of her last six matches on clay court.

Belinda Bencic is coming off a straight sets win over Allie Kiick that took 15 games to decide. In the victory, Bencic won 85 percent of her first serve points and 42 percent of her second serve points. Bencic won 74 percent of her total service points and converted on four of her five break points. Bencic has snapped back after two straight losses, as she has yet to drop a set this tournament and has been serving extremely comfortably on these clay courts. Bencic can win at least three matches in a single tournament for the third time in her last four tries. Bencic has won three of her last four matches on clay court.

There’s no previous match history between these two players.

Townsend may be experiencing her breakthrough moment on the main tour after so much time in ITF play, but I’m still hesitant to trust her as the competition increases. Bencic has been one of the most consistent players this year up to this point on the women’s side and has to be considered one of the true contenders with the field looking the way it is.

I have to side with Bencic to reach the quarters.

Pick:
Belinda Bencic
