Danielle Parhizkaran-USA TODAY Sports

Bernard Tomic will be playing Fabio Fognini in the final of the 2018 WTA Chengdu Open in China.

Bernard Tomic has had a few tough years as his form had dropped but the Australian player looks to be back in form as he has had a very good tournament. Tomic won his semifinal match in straight sets. In that win, Bernard Tomic served exceptionally well as he hit 12 aces and won all of his service games. It is important to note that Bernard Tomic struggled when receiving serve as he won less than 30% of the points that were played during his non-service games in the semifinal. This is an aspect of Tomic’s game that he has to improve in this match since it will be essential to not allow Fognini to easily hold serve.

On the other side of the coin, Fabio Fognini enters this match having beaten Taylor Fritz in 3 sets in the semifinal. It was a solid win by Fognini as he won the second and third set easily after losing the opening set via a tiebreaker. Fognini is the top seed for this tournament and he is a much higher ranked player when compared with Bernard Tomic. Fognini is also much more acclimatized to the scenario of an ATP final as the Italian has reached this stage of a tournament multiple times this year.

Fabio Fognini and Bernard Tomic have played three times in the past. Fognini has won 2 of those match including the most recent clash which occurred in 2016.

While Bernard Tomic has had a very strong tournament, I see him losing this match. Fabio Fognini is a much stronger player than Tomic and the Italian has more recent experience of performing on the big stage. I am predicting Fabio Fognini to win his 9th title.

Pick:
Fabio Fognini
