Croatian tennis superstar, Borna Coric has made it into the second round of the 2019 ATP Halle Open in Germany. Borna Coric will now play against Joao Sousa from Portugal.
Joao Sousa made it into this tournament via the qualifying event where he was the top seed. Sousa was convincing throughout the qualifiers and he continued his good form in the opening round where he defeated Hubert Hurkacz in straight sets. The opening set of the match was close as Sousa via a tiebreaker but the Portuguese player was outstanding in the second set which he won 6-1. It has been a tough 2019 season for Joao Sousa as he has not made a semifinal appearance all season. This is expected to be a tough match for Sousa as he is playing against the number 4 seed.
Looking at his opponent, Borna Coric has continued his supreme form by winning his opening round fixture in straight sets. Borna Coric defeated Jaume Munar in the opening round. During the victory, Coric served exceptionally well as the Croatian hit 5 aces which helped him win 77% of his service points. Coric won 100% of his service games, 1 return game, and 1 tiebreaker to secure the victory.
It has been an outstanding start to the grass court season for Borna Coric as he made the semifinals at the Rosmalen Grass Court Championship last week. Coric is a very strong grass court player and he is the defending champion at the Halle Open. Considering his current form and his record at this venue, Borna Coric will be very tough to stop.
This will be the first time that Joao Sousa and Borna Coric will be playing each other at an ATP event.
Joao Sousa had a good win in the previous round but I see him tournament ending after this match. Borna Coric is playing on a different level and the Croatian will be high on confidence considering he won this event last season. Coric was impressive during the Rosmalen Tennis Championship and I see him continuing his good form by winning this match.
