Borna Coric and Juan-Martin Del Potro meet in the third round of the 2018 tennis Shanghai Masters.
Borna Coric is coming off a straight sets win over Bradley Klahn that took 18 games to decide. In the victory, Coric won 90 percent of his first serve points and 89 percent of his second serve points. Coric lost just four total service points in his victory and didn’t face a single break point. It was easily one of the best performances we’ve seen from Coric in quite some time, and if he’s capable of serving that way again, he’s got a chance to make a serious run in this big tournament. Coric has been broken once in his last five sets overall. Coric has a chance to win three matches in a single tournament for the first time since the US Open. Coric has split his last six matches on hard court.
Juan-Martin Del Potro is coming off a straight sets win over Richard Gasquet that took 25 games to decide. In the victory, Del Potro won 77 percent of his first serve points and 50 percent of his second serve points. Del Potro won 68 percent of his total service points and produced two breaks on three tries. Del Potro came back down in the first set and managed to win a second set tiebreak despite being down 2-6 at one point. It was an incredible performance from Del Potro that required him to dig deep, but it’s important to note that he looked fatigued in that tiebreak to the point I don’t think he would have won a third set. It’s going to be interesting to see if there’s a carry over with Del Potro and his conditioning. Del Potro has won 11 of his last 13 matches on hard court.
These two have played twice and Del Potro has won both matches in straight sets. The last match was in this years US Open and the other match was in the 2016 Boodles Challenge. The US Open match was decided in 26 games.
We’ve been backing Del Potro heavy the past couple of months and have made some nice coin along the way. However, Del Potro didn’t look good in his last match, as he spent much of the second set bent over and possibly considering retirement. We know how Del Potro can get when those legs get heavy, and I want no part of it. Coric is a well conditioned young player who is going to push his opponent. If Del Potro isn’t 100 percent, he’s likely going to lose this match.
Give me Coric.
