Borna Coric and Juan Martin del Potro meet in the fourth round of the 2018 tennis US Open.
Borna Coric is coming off a straight sets win over Daniil Medvedev that took 29 games to decide. In the victory, Coric won 73 percent of his first serve points and 57 percent of his second serve points. Coric won 66 percent of his total service points and saved four of his six break points. Coric can still improve his second serve, but he’s now won seven straight sets and is in the fourth round of a grand slam for the first time in his career at 21 years old. If Coric continues to spay winners and get his first serve in play, he’s going to be a tough out. Let’s not forget each of Coric’s last three losses have gone the distance, so he’s tough even in a losing effort. Coric has a chance to make his first ever grand slam quarterfinal. Coric has won five of his last seven matches on hard court.
Juan Martin del Potro is coming off a straight sets win over Fernando Verdasco that took 34 games to decide. In the victory, del Potro won 80 percent of his first serve points and 47 percent of his second serve points. del Potro won 69 percent of his total service points and hit 41 winners in the near three hour victory. del Potro has yet to drop a set this tournament and is coming off a performance in which he simply was bombing the ball, hitting power shot after power shot and pushing his opponent off the court. If del Potro can stay in this form and hit with such power consistently, he’ll have something to say about who wins this title. del Potro has a chance to make a grand slam quarterfinal for the fifth time in his last eight tries. del Potro can make a US Open quarterfinal for the sixth time in his last eight appearances. del Potro has matches on hard court.
This will be the first ever match between these two players.
Coric is a strong competitor who has grown up quickly over the years and certainly a worthy opponent. However, you can count on one hand how many guys are capable of beating del Potor when he’s spraying winners with such power and pushing his opponent off the court. Coric hasn’t put himself in that conversation yet and doesn’t have the experience to handle that on the big stage. del Potro is hitting his spots with such accuracy and strength, and the only thing slowing him down is fatigue or his wrist flaring up.
del Potro makes the US Open quarterfinals for the sixth time in his last eight appearances.
