Borna Coric and Kevin Anderson meet in the quarterfinals of the 2018 Indian Wells Masters.
Borna Coric is coming off a three sets win over Taylor Fritz that took 31 games to decide. In the victory, Coric won 79 percent of his first serve points and 63 percent of his second serve points. Coric tried his best to give away his fourth round match and the wind certainly didn’t help, but he found a way to dig deep and get the job done. Coric has been pretty dominant this tournament up to this point and the one set he’s lost came in a tiebreak. In fact, Coric has lost just 11 games in the first seven sets he’s won this tournament, which is just another gear for the 21-year-old. Coric has lost each of his last four quarterfinal matches. Coric has won six of his last seven matches on hard court.
Kevin Anderson is coming off a three sets win over Pablo Carreno Busta that took 32 games to decide. In the victory, Anderson won 86 percent of his first serve points and 75 percent of his second serve points. Anderson was able to win majority of the big points and managed to dominate majority of his service game, but there’s room for improvement considering he got just 58 percent of his first serves in play. Maybe that had a lot to do with the wind conditions, but it has to make the South African feel good that he can still get the job done even when he doesn’t play his best. Anderson is now an impressive 14-3 on the season, playing possibly the best tennis of his life. Anderson has won five of his last seven quarterfinal matches. Anderson has won 10 of his last 11 matches on hard court.
These two have played three times and Anderson has won all three meetings. The most recent match was in the 2017 US Open, a match Anderson won in straight sets. Coric has never won a set against Anderson.
Comic has an advantage here given the youth, as this is a quick turnaround and conditioning and fresh legs could play a big part. However, based on the history and the form of Anderson, he’s tough to bet against. Anderson isn’t losing much these days to guys he should beat, and his serving is going to put a lot of pressure on Coric not to make mistakes. One break and Anderson pretty much wins the set.
Have to back Anderson, but it will be a competitive match.
