Croatian tennis superstar, Borna Coric has made it through to the quarterfinals of the 2019 ATP Halle Open in Germany. At this stage of the tournament, Borna Coric will play against Pierre-Hugues Herbert from France.
Pierre-Hugues Herbert won his previous match in 3 sets. It was a poor start to the match for Herbert as he lost the opening set but the Frenchman fought back extremely well to secure victory in the final 2 sets and the match. During the victory, Pierre-Hugues Herbert served exceptionally well. Herbert hit 9 aces which helped him win 77% of his service points. Pierre-Hugues Herbert won 87% of his service games during the victory.
Pierre-Hugues Herbert defeated the number 5 seed, Gael Monfils, in the opening round and that win seems to have given the player some confidence. This will be a much tougher contest than that in previous rounds as Pierre-Hugues Herbert is playing against the number 4 seed who is in good form.
Looking at his opponent, Borna Coric defeated Joao Sousa in 3 sets in the previous round. It was a good performance by Coric as he held his nerve to win 2 tiebreakers. Coric won 89% of his service games and 1 return game during his victory against Sousa.
Prior to arriving in Germany, Borna Coric played in the Rosmalen Grass Court Championship where he made the semifinals. Borna Coric has a very good record at Halle as he is the reigning champion. With his record at Halle and his current form, Borna Coric will be very tough to defeat.
Borna Coric and Pierre-Hugues Herbert have played each other 4 times in the past with both players winning on 2 occasions. The most recent match between these two players was earlier in the season at the Monte Carlo Masters where Borna Coric won in straight sets. Pierre-Hugues Herbert last defeated Borna Coric in 2014.
Taking everything into consideration, I am going to pick Borna Coric to win this match. Pierre-Hugues Herbert has played well in this tournament but I don’t see him being good enough to defeat Coric. Coric has established himself as an elite player and the Croatian has been in supreme form considering he made the semifinals at Rosmalen last week. Coric has a great record at Halle and I see him making it through to the semifinals.
