Carla Suarez Navarro and Belinda Bencic meet in the third round of the 2018 tennis Wimbledon.
Carla Suarez Navarro is coming off a straight sets win over Sara Sorribes Tormo that took 17 games to decide. In the victory, Navarro won 63 percent of her first serve points and 67 percent of her second serve points. Navarro won 64 percent of her total service points and converted on six of her 10 break chances. Navarro came into this tournament struggling, but she’s now produced 10 breaks in her last two matches and has a chance to win three matches in a single tournament for the first time since Madrid. This is a tournament that can certainly turn Navarro’s season around. Navarro hopes to make the fourth round of a grand slam for the eighth time in her last 11 appearances. Navarro has a chance at her third career fourth round appearance at the Wimbledon. Navarro has split her last four matches on grass court.
Belinda Bencic is coming off a three sets win over Alison Riske that took 28 games to decide. In the victory, Bencic won 66 percent of her first serve points and 39 percent of her second serve points. Bencic won 40 percent of her return points and broke on four of her 11 break chances. Bencic has to drastically improve her serve if she hopes to advance any further, but she’s produced 52 combined winners in her last two matches and seems to come away with the big points when needed most. Bencic is now in the third round of a grand slam for the first time in two years. Bencic hopes to make the fourth round of a grand slam for the fourth time in her career. Bencic hasn’t made the fourth round of a grand slam since the 2016 Australian Open. Bencic has won three of her last four matches on grass court.
These two have played once, which was in the 2015 Stuttgart Open, a match Navarro won in straight sets. The match took 23 games to be decided.
Bencic hasn’t served well enough to beat a feisty, aggressive player like Navarro, who has also improved in grand slam play the last few years. Navarro has looked very sharp in her first two performances and will make light work of the 21-year-old if those serving struggles continue. Bencic will have a hard time advancing past this round due to her up and down play that’s worked against lesser competition.
Navarro wins this match probably in straight sets.
