The Line: -- Over/Under:
Carla Suarez-Navarro and Venus Williams meet in the first round of the 2019 tennis Rogers Cup.
Carla Suarez-Navarro is coming off a quarterfinal trip in San Jose and enters this tournament winning five of her last seven matches. Suarez-Navarro hasn’t been great when it comes to getting her first serve in play as of late, but she’s found ways to grind out victories and has been aggressive coming forward to the net. Suarez-Navarro seems to have gotten past those hiccups that bothered her earlier in the year, but she must be consistent with her serve if she’s going to make a run in this tournament. Suarez-Navarro has lost her opening match five times since Indian Wells. Suarez-Navarro has split her last eight matches on hard court.
Venus Williams is coming off a first match exit in San Jose and has lost each of her last three matches overall. In her most recent performance, Venus won just 51 percent of her matches and was broken seven times. When Venus isn’t serving well and the unforced errors are taking over, she’s more than beatable and can play herself out of matches regardless of how her opponent is playing. Venus has been broken 14 times in her last seven sets. Venus has lost her opening match in three of her last four tournaments. Venus has split her last six matches on hard court.
These two have played 10 times and Venus has won seven of those matches, including the most recent in this years Miami Open. Navarro’s last win over Venus came in 2015 Miami. Six of the meetings have been decided in straight sets.
Venus owns the h2h and beat Suarez-Navarro earlier this year, but she’s simply not playing well right now and is hard to trust when those unforced errors are piling up. And the fact Venus hasn’t had many matches under her belt lately doesn’t provide much confidence she’ll be able to get out of this funk easily. Suarez-Navarro is putting together her best stretch of the season and should win this match as long as she gets her first serve in play.
I give the edge to Suarez-Navarro due to Venus struggling.
