Caroline Garcia will play Ashleigh Barty in a group stage match at the 2018 WTA Elite Trophy in China.

Ashleigh Barty lost her opening round match to Aryna Sabalenka and she now must win this match if she wants to keep her tournament alive. It was a disappointing opening round match for Barty as she was comfortably beaten in straight sets. During that loss, Barty struggled to deal with Sabalenka’s serve as she only 35% of the points played during her opponents serve which limited her to only winning 1 return game. Barty lost service games in both sets to allow Sabalenka to win 6-4, 6-4. Barty will not have as many problems dealing with Garcia’s serve as it is much weaker than that of Sabalenka. That being said, Caroline Garcia is a much more skilled baseline player meaning that this contest should involve much longer rallies.

Caroline Garcia enters this tournament is exceptional form after winning the Tianjin Open. Garcia was dominant in that tournament and she showed an exceptional ability to win return games as she averaged over 4 return games won per match. Caroline Garcia has an exceptional record in Asia as she has won most of the big tournaments in this continent. The conditions and courts seem to suit Caroline Garcia as she can hit her powerful baseline shots with more control. With Barty struggling in her opening match, Garcia will be hopeful of beating the Australian.

Caroline Garcia and Ashleigh Barty have played once in the past with Garcia winning that match in 3 sets. The match was at the final of the 2017 Wuhan Open where Garcia won the title.

This should be a close match but I am going to pick Caroline Garcia to win. Garcia has been playing good tennis and with her confidence high after her Tianjin Open title, she should be good enough to start her tournament with a win.
