The Line: -- Over/Under:
Caroline Garcia and Chloe Paquet meet in the semifinal of the 2019 tennis Internationaux de Strasbourg.
Caroline Garcia is coming off a three sets win over Marta Kostyuk that took 26 games to decide. In the victory, Garcia won 71 percent of her first serve points and 50 percent of her second serve points. Garcia won 62 percent of her total service points and converted on five of her eight break points. Garcia got 58 percent of her first serves in play and saved eight of her 11 break points. Garcia has needed eight sets to get to this point, but the key thing is that she’s winning matches, which is an improvement on how she was laying entering this tournament. Garcia hopes to make her first final appearance since last years Tianjin Open and the ninth final appearance of her career. Garcia has won five of her last seven matches on clay court.
Chloe Paquet is coming off a straight sets win over Daria Gavrilova that took 22 games to decide. In the victory, Paquet won 83 percent of her first serve points and 43 percent of her second serve points. Paquet won 66 percent of her total service points and converted on two of her seven break points. Paquet got 58 percent of her first serves in play and saved five of her six break points. Paquet has won all six sets this tournament and has done so by beating two players ranked inside the top-100. That’s an accomplishment in itself based on the lack of success on the main tour for the 24-year-old from France. Paquet has a chance to make her first ever WTA final appearance. Paquet has won five of her last six matches on clay court.
These two played once, which was a match in the 2017 French Open, a match Garcia won in straight sets. The match took 22 games to be decided.
Paquet has surprised this tournament, has to be the more motivated player and will have the home crowd. There’s a case to be made for Paquet in this match. With that said, Garcia is head and shoulders the better player, and she should be focused on getting more reps and gaining confidence with the way her season has played out.
I’ll take Garcia in straight sets.
