The Line: -- Over/Under:
Caroline Garcia and Simona Halep meet in the quarterfinals of the 2018 tennis Rogers Open.
Caroline Garcia is coming off a straight sets win over Maria Sharapova that took 17 games to decide. In the victory, Garcia won 70 percent of her first serve points and 65 percent of her second serve points. Garcia won 68 percent of her total service points and was broken just once on two break points. Garcia has been much more consistent with her serve in this tournament, which is key for her given her defensive and return skills. The serve is usually the deciding factor for the 24-year-old from France. Garcia has been inconsistent this season overall, but she’s played some of her best tennis on hard court this season and has a chance to make the semifinal of a WTA Premier 5 tournament for the second time in her career. Garcia has won six of her last nine matches on hard court.
Simona Halep is coming off a straight sets win over Venus Williams that took 16 games to decide. In the victory, Halep won 77 percent of her first serve points and 41 percent of her second serve points. Halep won 65 percent of her total service points and 56 percent of her return points. Producing five breaks on nine break points, it was a complete clinic from the top ranked player in the world. As long as Halep continues to serve well and doesn’t pile up the unforced errors, she has to be considered the favorite to win this tournament for what would be the second time in her career. Halep has a chance to make the semifinal of a WTA Premier 5 tournament for the ninth time in her last 10 appearances. Halep has won 10 of her last 13 matches on hard court.
These two have played five times and Halep has won four of those matches. The most recent meeting was in this years Rome Masters, a match Halep won in straight sets. Garcia’s only win over Halep came in 2017 in Beijing. The last four meetings between these two players was decided in straight sets.
Garcia is that one player who is capable of beating anyone on any given night but doesn’t get the same respect as the top players. The issue is Garcia hasn’t served as well as she’s capable of in recent matches, and that’s key given just how dialed in Halep has been this season overall. When Halep is playing well, she’s the best player in the world and should be the favorite against anybody. Halep will have to drop in her game in order for Garcia to have a chance here.
Halep rolls to the semis.
