Caroline Wozniacki and Angelique Kerber meet in the semifinals of the 2018 tennis Eastbourne International.
Caroline Wozniacki is coming off a straight sets win over Ashleigh Barty that took 19 games to decide. In the victory, Wozniacki won 86 percent of her first serve points and 32 percent of her second serve points. Wozniacki won 45 percent of her return points and won four of her six break points. Wozniacki struggled big time with her second serve, but overall it was a pretty solid performance and puts her in her fourth semifinal of the year. Wozniacki has been extremely sharp with her first serve this tournament, which makes her almost impossible to beat given her defense and return skills. Wozniacki hopes to make her third final appearance of the year and first since the Australian Open. Wozniacki has won six of his last seven matches on grass court.
Angelique Kerber is coming off a three sets win over Daria Kasatkina that took 33 games to decide. In the victory, Kerber won 60 percent of her first serve points and 56 percent of her second serve points. Kerber found a way to will herself to victory in the third set, and she won 51 percent of her return points and produced eight breaks. It’s not alway pretty with Kerber, but she’s able to reach another gear when needed and grind out a victory. The only question now for the German is how much she has left in the tank, as that was a draining match physically and mentally. Kerber hopes to make her second final appearance of the year and 28th final appearance of her career. Kerber has won six of her last eight matches on grass court.
These two have played 14 times and Kerber has won eight of those matches. The most recent meeting was in this Doha of this year, a match Wozniacki won in three sets. Four of the last seven meetings were decided in three sets. Kerber has won the only match on grass against Wozniacki.
Past matches between these two players have been very tight and usually go three sets. Kerber has the ability to push Wozniacki around and make her run a ton. However, Kerber is coming off a tough three set match that is sure to take a toll on her. If this match goes two-plus hours as well, there has to be a considerable edge for Wozniacki, who has played just seven sets to get to this point and is coming off a rather easy victory.
Coin flip match, but Wozniacki grinds it out based on the rest advantage.
