Caroline Wozniacki and Ekaterina Alexandrova meet in the first round of the 2018 tennis Istanbul Cup.
Caroline Wozniacki will play her first match since losing to Monica Puig in the Miami Masters. Wozniacki has had issues with her serve as of late and has been broken a combined nine times in her last two matches. Four of Wozniacki’s five losses on the season have come since she won the Australian Open, her first grand slam of her career. And while that may be worrisome for some, we have seen players struggle a bit after winning such a big tournament. Wozniacki should be able to get back on track, especially with a good deal of time off since the last time she played. Wozniacki has won eight of her last 10 matches on clay court.
Ekaterina Alexandrova enters this tournament losing four of her last six matches and struggling to find her form on the big stage. Alexandrova has played just four matches on the main draw this season and is coming off a match against Anna Blinkova in which she got just 49 percent of her first serves in play. Alexandrova simply has to be better with her serve if she’s going to have a chance in this match, as she’s been broken a combined 11 times in her last three matches. A victory here would easily be the biggest of Alexandrova’s career, as she has zero career wins over top-10 players and could use a signature moment as her breakthrough moment. Alexandrova has split her last eight matches on clay court.
These two have played once, which was in the 2017 Canadian Masters, a match Wozniacki on in straight sets. The match took 15 games to be decided.
Wozniacki has had her fair share of hiccups since winning the AO, but this should be a rather routine straight sets match. Alexandrova has serious issues with her serve as of late and has been crushed more times than not when playing some of the bigger names in the world. Alexandrova finding a way to win a set in this match would be a victory in itself.
Wozniacki advances to the next round.
