The Line: -- Over/Under:
Caroline Wozniacki and Ekaterina Makarova meet in the second round of the 2018 tennis Wimbledon.
Caroline Wozniacki is coming off a straight sets win over Varvara Lepchenko that took 15 games to decide. In the victory, Wozniacki won 78 percent of her first serve points and 65 percent of her second serve points. Wozniacki is coming off a match in which she won 73 percent of her service points and 59 percent of her return points, producing just 10 unforced errors. An extremely clean match for Wozniacki overall and very quick, which gives her plenty of rest for the next round. As long as Wozniacki can hold her own serving wise, she’s going to have a great chance to win this tournament, as we know her defense and return skills show up every time she takes the court. Wozniacki has lost before the third round of a grand slam three times since 2016. Wozniacki has won six straight matches on grass court.
Ekaterina Makarova is coming off a three sets win over Petra Martic that took 30 games to decide. In the victory, Makarova won 73 percent of her first serve points and 38 percent of her second serve points. Makarova won 60 percent of her total service points and hit 34 winners to produce the first round victory. You’d like to see Makarova limit her unforced error numbers moving forward, but she’s going to give herself a chance if she can dictate so many points on her terms. Makarova has to control pace and hit tons of winners if she’s going to win this match and make the third round of a grand slam for the 14th time in her last 15 tries. Makarova hasn’t lost in the second round of the Wimbledon since 2010. Makarova has 10 wins over top-10 players since the start of 2017. Makarova has lost two of her last three matches on grass court.
These two have played eight times and Wozniacki has won seven of those matches. The most recent match was in the 2017 US Open, a match won in three sets. Wozniacki is 2-0 against on grass court.
Makarova is a live underdog in this match given her success in grand slam play, as she’s been bounced before the third round just once since 2015. Makarova also has a great deal of success against top-10 players, and she was a beast last year against top compassion. However, Wozniacki dominates the head to head and had to work far less harder to win her first match. If Wozniacki can continue to serve at a high level, she’s making a deep run in this tournament, as the rest of her game always shows up.
Wozniacki wins in two competitive sets.
