The Line: -- Over/Under:
Caroline Wozniacki and Elina Svitolina meet in the round robin stages of the 2018 tennis WTA Finals.
Caroline Wozniacki is coming off a three sets win over Petra Kvitova that took 29 games to decide. In the victory, Wozniacki won 62 percent of her first serve points and 50 percent of her second serve points. Wozniacki won 58 percent of her total service points and produced six breaks on nine break points. Wozniacki looked much better than she did in her opening match, as she had just 14 unforced errors and got 70 percent of her first serves in play. You’d like to see Wozniacki be better with her serve overall, but we all know her game by now. Clean tennis and defense is what gets Wozniacki over the top, two things she did in her recent performance. Wozniacki has split her last four matches on indoor hard court.
Elina Svitolina is coming off a three sets win over Karolina Pliskova that took 26 games to decide. In the victory, Svitolina won 65 percent of her first serve points and 46 percent of her second serve points. Svitolina won 57 percent of her total service points and produced five breaks on 13 break points. Svitolina has a chance to sweep her way through this group, and she’s produced eight breaks while hitting nine aces in her first two matches. Svitolina has to like her chances to win another match if she continues to spray winners the way she has recently. Svitolina has now won eight of her last 11 sets played and has a chance to make it out of the round robin stages for the first time in the WTA Finals. Svitolina has won three of her last four matches on indoor hard court.
These two have played four times and Svitolina has won three of those meetings. The most recent match was in Singapore of 2017, a match Wozniacki won in 14 games. Three of the four matches between Svitolina and Wozniacki have been decided in straight sets.
Svitolina has been the better player through two matches, but she has the style that Wozniacki should feel comfortable against. While she’s beaten Wozniacki in three of the four meetings, she also lost to Caroline in the most recent match, winning two combined games in two sets. If Wozniacki is going to play the clean tennis she played in her last match, I give her the edge against the sometimes too aggressive Svitolina.
I like Wozniacki to win this match.
