Caroline Wozniacki and Samantha Stosur meet in the first round of the 2018 tennis US Open.
Caroline Wozniacki enters this tournament on a three-match losing streak and left Cincinnati with a left ankle injury. Right when it looked like Wozniacki was playing some of the best tennis in recent memory and fresh off a title in Eastbourne, she has issues with her serve and then gets inured. The good news is Wozniacki should be well rested for this tournament and she always enjoys the US Open considering she has a condo in New York and is very comfortable in the area. Wozniacki hasn’t lost in the first round of the US open since 2012. Wozniacki hasn’t lost in the first round of a grand slam since the 2016 Wimbledon. Wozniacki has lost four straight matches on hard court.
Samantha Stosur enters this tournament losing five of her last seven matches when you include qualifying matches. Stosur is coming off a first round loss in Connecticut in which she won 55 percent of her service points and was broken three times. Stosur may be in shaky form, but she’s an underrated veteran who knows how to grind out matches and should never be taken lightly. Stosur doesn’t have a win over a top-10 player since 2016. Stosur has made it out of the first round of a grand slam in six of her last eight appearances. Stosur has lost in the first round of the US Open just once in her career. Stosur has lost four of her last six matches on hard court.
These two have played 12 times and Wozniacki won seven of those matches. The most recent match was in the 2016 Wuhan Open, a match Wozniacki won in straight sets. Wozniacki has won five of the last seven matches against Stosur.
This isn’t an easy match for Wozniacki at all, as Stosur not only has success against her but is a grinder who doesn’t lose easily. Even in losses, Stosur is going to make you work. With that said, Wozniacki loves the courts in New York and has had the upper hand over Stosur in recent matches.
It won’t be easy, but Wozniacki grinds it out.
