Caroline Wozniacki and Sloane Stephens meet Saturday in the semifinals of the 2017 Rogers Cup.
Caroline Wozniacki is coming off a three sets win over Karolina Pliskova that took 35 games to decide. In the victory, Wozniacki won 73 percent of her first serve points and 48 percent of her second serve points. Wozniacki made quite the comeback to remove the top seed in the tournament and did so by winning 42 percent of her return points. A win like that has to give Wozniacki all the confidence in the world considering she had a great deal of success against one of the top servers in the game. Wozniacki looks for her sixth final appearance of the season and first since the Swedish Open. Wozniacki has won her last seven semifinal appearances overall. Wozniacki has won eight of her last nine matches on hard court.
Sloane Stephens is coming off a three sets win over Lucie Safarova that took 27 games to decide. In the victory, Stephens won 58 percent of her first serve points and 51 percent of her second serve points. Stephens showed great fight in her quarterfinal match after battling back from dropping the second set and overcoming several match points in the third. Stephens has had a lot of grit in this tournament and is finding ways to win even when she’s not exactly playing her best. The only question with Stephens is how much she has left in the tank with a quick turnaround and coming off such a draining match. Stephens hopes to make her first final of the season and first since the 2016 Charleston Open. Stephens has split her last eight matches on hard court.
These two have played six times and Wozniacki has won five of those meetings. The most recent match was in the 2016 Aukland Open, a match Stephens won in straight sets. Every match between these two have been decided in straight sets.
Wozniacki has made light work of Stephens in pretty much every meeting, and Sloane is somebody who is still getting her feet wet after missing so much time on tour due to injury. You have to wonder how much conditioning is going to impact Stephens in this match. Also, after Wozniacki topped Pliskova the way she did, you have to consider her to be the favorite to win this tournament.
Interesting match, but Wozniacki has to a decent sized favorite here.
