Caroline Wozniacki and Venus Williams meet in the 2017 WTA Finals.
Caroline Wozniacki is coming off a straight sets win over Karolina Pliskova that took 22 games to decide. In the victory, Wozniacki won 61 percent of her first serve points and 38 percent of her second serve points. Wozniacki has now won each of her last three matches, all three in straight sets, and she’s fresh off a performance in which she won 54 percent of her total service points and 52 percent of her return points. Now with 13 wins over top-10 players this season, Wozniacki is having one of her better seasons at 27 years old. Wozniacki has a chance to win her first WTA Finals despite this being her fifth appearance. Wozniacki looks for her second title of the season and is 21-16 in her career in final appearances on hard court. Wozniacki has lost 10 of her last 14 final appearances overall. Wozniacki has won six of her last nine matches on hard court.
Venus Williams is coming off a three sets win over Caroline Garcia that took 30 games to decide. In the victory, Venus won 67 percent of her first serve points and 52 percent of her second serve points. Venus has managed to win three of her four matches this tournament and two of her victories have come in three sets. Venus won 62 percent of her service points in her last match, and if percentages like that continue, she has a great chance to win considering her return always gives her a chance. Venus has a chance to win her first WTA Finals since 2008 and second overall. Venus looks for her first title of the season and is 31-18 in her career in final appearances on hard court. Venus has split her last 10 final appearances overall. Venus has won 10 of her last 14 matches on hard court.
These two have played seven times and Venus has won all seven meetings. The most recent match was in the 2015 Miami Masters, a match Venus won in straight sets. Every previous match was on hard court and six of the seven meetings have been decided in straight sets. The only time Wozniacki won a set against Venus was in the 2015 Auckland Open.
Wozniacki has burned me many times in big matches, and the head to head numbers suggest this is going to be an easy victory for Venus. However, if there was ever a time to break the streak, it would be here. Wozniacki has been the most consistent and dominant player this tournament and has far less wear and tear on her body. Venus has played some marathon matches, and you have to wonder if the 37-year-old has much left in the tank for possibly another draining performance. If Wozniacki can’t beat Venus in this match, I’m not sure when she will ever be able to get it done.
Give me Wozniacki to win the WTA Finals.
