Azarenka vs. Bellis
|Date & Time||Monday July 3, 2017, 9:00 PM (EDT)|
The Line: Bellis -110 / Azarenka -120 -- Over/Under:
CiCi Bellis and Victoria Azarenka meet in the first round of the 2017 Wimbledon.
CiCi Bellis will make her first ever Wimbledon appearance and is fresh off making the semifinals in the Mallorca Open. Bellis is 12-8 this season on the main tour and has been playing some really consistent tennis ever since the Rome Masters and has had great success on her return in the grass court season. However, Bellis had zero success in her last match against Julia Goerges, and it will be interesting to see if that performance carries over for the 18-year-old. Either way, a 3-1 grass court record this season should give Bellis some confidence. Bellis has never lost in the first round of a grand slam in her three career appearances. Bellis has won three of her last four matches on grass court.
Victoria Azarenka will make her first grand slam appearance since last years French Open, and this will be just her third match of the year. Azarenka beat Risa Ozaki in three sets in her first match back and lost to Ana Konjuh in straight sets, her only matches since returning from her pregnancy that ended her tennis play for over a year. Everybody knows what Azarenka is capable of when in great form, as she is a former No. 1 player in the world and her aggressiveness is unmatched. However, it’s going to take Azarenka some time to get back in the swing of things and compete at the highest level we’re used to seeing from her. Azarenka has lost in the first round of a grand slam once since 2011 (2016 French Open). Azarenka has won five of her last seven matches on grass court.
This will be the first time these two meet on the tennis court.
This is a tough match to predict because you have no idea what to expect from Azarenka. The conditioning isn’t there yet and her serve was nonexistent in her match against Konjuh. Bellis is also no slouch and can take her game to another level when motivated. This is a complete coin flip, but I’ll side with Azarenka because of her experience and her fiery competitive spirit that sometimes wills her to victory. Azarenka should have just enough to win possibly a three setter.
