CiCi Bellis and Zarina Diyas will meet in an improbable second round matchup of the US Open.
CiCi Bellis is now the talk of the US Open, as she defeated Dominika Cibulkova in three sets. Bellis didn’t just win, she dominated much of the match, including winning the first set 6-1 and making terrific shots in the third set to simply ‘wow’ the New York crowd. CiCi Bellis became the youngest player since Anna Kournikova in 1996 to win a match at the US Open. What Bellis lacks in experience, she makes up for it in confidence and shotmaking ability. Bellis was hitting winners left and right against Cibulkova, and you could just see her confidence growing with each shot. Another thing Bellis has going for her in this match is the fact she is American, so she will have the crowd’s full support. While it may be just one victory, CiCi Bellis has clearly arrived and isn’t hoping her run ends anytime soon.
Zarina Diyas won her opening match effortlessly over Lesia Tsurenko, which took just 15 games to be decided. Diyas hit 73 percent of her first serves in play and won six of her seven break point opportunities. Diyas needed this victory after failing to qualify at New Heaven and getting blown out in the CIncinnati Masters by Lucie Safarova. Only 20 years old, Zarina Diyas is also quietly making a name for herself, reaching the fourth round of this year’s Wimbledon and the third round of the Australian Open. Diyas is a disciplined player who makes her opponent earn her points and is a tough out when she’s avoiding mistakes such as double faults.
This is the first time these two players have faced one another.
This is going to be a hell of a match if you like tennis and enjoy seeing up-and-comers grow before your very eyes. Catherine Bellis will obviously be the bigger story after what she just accomplished, but Zarina Diyas is also a young player who has sneaked into the Top 50 in the world.
Overall, I’m going with Bellis and the home crowd. While the pressure will be a lot bigger, I think the fans being on her side will help get her over the top.
