Damir Dzumhur and Mikhail Kukushkin meet Monday afternoon in the third round of the Miami Masters.
Damir Dzumhur is coming off a victory over Rafael Nadal after he retired in the third set. Dzumhur is a 23-year-old who is still trying to make a name for himself and build on a solid 2015 season. Dzumhur has now won back-to-back singles matches for the first time this year and is fresh off his first ever victory over a top-10 player after just six tries. Dzumhur showed great fight after dropping the first set and was able to overcome some brutal weather conditions. It will certainly be interesting to see if Dzumhur can build on the biggest victory over his career to date. This is by far the furthest Dzumhur has ever gone in the ATP World Tour Masters 1000.
Mikhail Kukushkin is coming off a victory over Thomaz Bellucci after he retired in the third set. Including the qualifying for this tournament, Kukushkin has now won six of his last seven matches, and he can only hope that can help turnaround what’s been some rough couple of years for the 28-year-old. Just a top-50 player last year, Kukushkin has had a hard time dealing with consistency and has battled injuries as well. This is another winnable match for Kukushkin and a chance for him to get on track. Kukushkin has never gotten out of the third round in the ATP Masters Series.
These two have played just once in the past, which was in the 2013 Kosice Challenger, a match Kukushkin won in three sets. The final two sets lasted eight or less games. This will be the first time these two meet on hard court.
This is an interesting match between two guys who aren’t used to much success in bigger tournaments. In these type of spots, I like to go with the more experienced guy, which happens to be Kukushkin here. Besides, this has letdown written all over it for Dzumhur after a win over Nadal.
