Daniil Medvedev vs Joao Sousa 4/15/19 Monte-Carlo Masters Tennis Pick, Odds, and Prediction

Jayne Kamin-Oncea-USA TODAY Sports

Russian tennis superstar, Daniil Medvedev will play at the 2019 ATP Monte-Carlo Masters. Medvedev will begin his campaign against Joao Sousa from Portugal.

Joao Sousa last played at the Miami Masters where the Portuguese player made the third round. During the Miami Masters, Sousa beat the likes of Steve Johnson but was eliminated by South African superstar, Kevin Anderson. While Sousa will be happy with his Miami Open campaign, there is a big issue for the Portuguese player as he is struggling with his serving. In his last 5 matches, Joao Sousa has averages less than 1 return game win per set and that is an issue that could cost him against a player like Medvedev.

On the other side of the coin, Daniil Medvedev also made it to the third round of the Miami Masters. Medvedev was beaten in the third round by Roger Federer. It has been a strong 2019 season for Daniil Medvedev as he made the semifinals of the 2019 ATP Rotterdam Open, finished second at the ATP Brisbane International and won the ATP Sofia Open. Daniil Medvedev has looked high on confidence this season and it will be tough to beat the Russian.

Daniil Medvedev and Joao Sousa have played each other twice in the past with both players winning on one occasion. The most recent match between these two players was in 2018 at ATP St Petersburg where Daniil Medvedev won in straight sets.

There is an argument to support Sousa to win this match since the Portuguese player is strong on clay. That being said, I am going to pick Daniil Medvedev to win this match. In the 2019 season, Medvedev has been a much better player when compared to Joao Sousa. Medvedev looks very confident leading up to this match and I see him winning in straight sets.

Pick:
Daniil Medvedev
