Daniil Medvedev and Nicolas Jarry meet in the quarterfinals of the 2019 tennis Barcelona.

Daniil Medvedev is coming off a straight sets win over Mackenzie McDonald that took 17 games to decide. In the victory, Medvedev won 54 percent of his first serve points and 68 percent of his second serve points. Medvedev won 60 percent of his total service points and converted on five of his 14 break points. Medvedev has won four of his five sets this tournament and has produced a combined 10 breaks. We know Medvedev hits the ball with great pace and can serve at a high level, but he’s a completely different problem when he’s got his return working at a high level. Medvedev has a chance to win three matches for the fourth time in his last seven tournaments. Medvedev has won six of his last seven matches on clay court.

Nicolas Jarry is coming off a three sets win over Grigor Dimitrov that took 31 games to decide. In the victory, Jarry won 73 percent of his first serve points and 46 percent of his second serve points. Jarry won 62 percent of his total service points and converted on two of his six break points. Jarry just beat a quality player despite dropping the first set and needing a third set tiebreak to close the deal. While he’s needed nine sets to get to this point, Jarry has beaten back-to-back respectable names, so he can no longer be overlooked in this tournament. Jarry has a chance to win four straight matches for the first time since Sao Paulo last year. Jarry has split his last eight matches on clay court.

There’s no match history between these two players.

Jarry has burned me twice this tournament and is worthy of consideration based on his last two matches. Still, Medvedev has become such a balanced player these last few months and seems to be quite comfortable on clay surface. Medvedev is also a little more levelheaded than Jarry’s last two opponents and won’t allow a poor game to impact the rest of the match.

Nice run for Jarry, but Medvedev should get the job done here.

Pick:
Daniil Medvedev
