The Line: -- Over/Under:
Daniil Medvedev and Novak Djokovic meet in the fourth round of the 2019 tennis Australian Open.
Daniil Medvedev is coming off a straight sets win over David Goffin that took 30 games to decide. In the victory, Medvedev won 86 percent of his first serve points and 34 percent of his second serve points. Medvedev won 68 percent of his total service points and produced six breaks on 11 break points. Medvedev has won all nine sets this tournament and has just 38 unforced errors, a number that gives him a fighting chance against anybody. If Medvedev is going to play that clean, he’s got a chance to continue doing serious damage. Medvedev has one career win over a top-10 player, which came against Stan Wawrinka in the 2017 Wimbledon. Medvedev has a chance to make his first career grand slam quarterfinal. Medvedev has won six of his last seven matches on hard court.
Novak Djokovic is coming off a four sets win over Denis Shapovalov that took 35 games to decide. In the victory, Djokovic won 75 percent of his first serve points and 62 percent of his second serve points. Djokovic won 70 percent of his total service points and converted on eight of his 13 break points. Djokovic was frustrated and allowed the third set to get away from him, but he buckled down and simply dominated a fourth set that took 26 minutes to complete. Djokovic is good enough to beat this field being his normal self, but he has a second gear he can reach that makes him nearly impossible to defeat in a best out of five sets. Djokovic hopes to make his fourth straight grand slam quarterfinal and his 10th ever quarterfinal trip in the Australian Open. Djokovic did lose in the fourth round of the Australian Open last year. Djokovic has won 10 of his last 11 matches on hard court.
These two have played twice and Djokovic has won both matches. The most recent meeting was in Eastbourne of 2017, a match Djokovic won in straight sets. The other match was in the 2017 Davis Cup, a match Djokovic won in a little over three sets before Medvedev retired down 1-2 in completed sets.
Medvedev will make this a competitive match due to his serving ability and the way he uses the whole court. There will be a lot of points where Medvedev dictates the pace and it wouldn’t be surprising to see him steal a set. As for who wins, you can’t bet against Djokovic. He just showed he can tap into a different level when needed and isn’t that worried about his competition. After dropping the third set of his last match, Djokovic gave the crowd a sarcastic thumbs up as to say watch this. He then made light work in the fourth set. It’s Djokovic’s tournament to lose at this point.
Djokovic wins in straight sets.
