Daniil Medvedev and Novak Djokovic meet in the semifinals of the 2019 tennis Cincinnati Open.
Daniil Medvedev is coming off a straight sets win over Andrey Rublev that took 17 games to decide. In the victory, Medvedev won 75 percent of his first serve points and 57 percent of his second serve points. Medvedev won 67 percent of his total service points and converted on four of his seven break points. Medvedev got 55 percent of his first serves in play, faced just one break point and hit nine aces. Medvedev has won all eight sets this tournament and each of his last 12 victories have been decided in straight sets. Medvedev looks to make his sixth final appearance of the year and the 10th final of his career. Medvedev is 1-1 in his career in Masters 1000 semifinal trips, both coming this year. Medvedev has six career wins over top-10 players, with five of those wins coming this year. Medvedev has won 12 of his last 14 matches on hard court.
Novak Djokovic is coming off a straight sets win over Lucas Pouille that took 20 games to decide. In the victory, Djokovic won 89 percent of his first serve points and 39 percent of his second serve points. Djokovic won 75 percent of his total service points and converted on two of his four break points. Djokovic got 71 percent of his first serves in play and saved all three of his break points. Djokovic has won all six sets this tournament and he’s won seven of his last 10 matches in straight sets. Djokovic looks to make his fifth final appearance of the year and the 110th of his career. A win here also gives Djokovic his seventh time making the final in Cincinnati. Djokovic has won six of his last eight matches on hard court.
These two have played four times and Djokovic has won three of those meetings. However, Medvedev won the most recent match this year in Monte Carlo. Only one of the three meetings were decided in straight sets.
Medvedev has had success against Djokovic in nearly all four of their matches, so expect a long, physical match. Medvedev has also been brilliant on hard court these last couple of months. With that said, betting against Djokovic in a semifinal match with the way he’s playing isn’t an option for me. He’s too sharp and too consistent, and he almost never loses in these spots.
Give me Djokovic.
