The Line: -- Over/Under:
Daniil Medvedev and Rafael Nadal meet in the final of the 2019 tennis Rogers Cup.
Daniil Medvedev is coming off a straight sets win over Karen Khachanov that took 20 games to decide. In the victory, Medvedev won 89 percent of his first serve points and 36 percent of his second serve points. Medvedev won 68 percent of his total service points and converted on four of his six break points. Medvedev got 57 percent of his first serves in play, was broken twice and hit five double faults. Medvedev has won all eight sets this tournament and 10 of his last 11 wins overall have been decided in straight sets. Medvedev looks to win his second title of the year and the fifth title of his career. Medvedev has lost three of his last four final appearances overall and is 4-3 in final appearances on hard court for his career. Medvedev has won eight of his last nine matches on hard court.
Rafael Nadal is coming off a walkover win over Gael Monfils, as the Frenchman withdrew due to injury. Nadal has won six of his seven sets this tournament and will have a major rest advantage obviously after not having to play a semifinal match. Nadal has had issues at time this tournament with his second serve, but a rested Nadal is dangerous no matter how well he’s playing entering a match. Nadal looks to win his third title of the year and the 83rd title of his career. Nadal has won 13 of his last 15 final appearances overall and is 19-26 in final appearances on hard court for his career. Nadal has won eight of his last nine matches on hard court.
There’s no match history between these two players.
Medvedev has been incredible this hard court season and is going to have his chances to win this match if he continues to get his first serve in play. The problem is Nadal is fresh after not having to play a semifinal match, and I’m not sure how anybody bets against him in spots like this. It’s hard enough to beat Nadal regardless of circumstances, it’s damn near impossible when he was gifted a victory to reach the final.
Nadal wins the Canadian Open for the fifth time.
