The Line: -- Over/Under:
David Ferrer and Mikhail Kukushkin meet in the second round of the 2018 tennis Eastbourne International.
David Ferrer is coming off a straight sets win over Matteo Berrettini that took 21 games to decide. In the victory, Ferrer won 64 percent of his first serve points and 53 percent of his second serve points. Ferrer converted on all five of his break chances and managed to save eight break points of his own, putting together one of his better showings of the season. Ferrer hasn’t been the same player we’re used to seeing for a couple of years now, and he entered this tournament on a three match losing streak. We know Ferrer is the ultimate grinder and can simply outwork opponents when up to it, but the Spaniard simply hasn’t looked good recently and one has to question if age is catching up to him now that he’s 36 years old. Ferrer has split his last eight matches on grass court.
Mikhail Kukushkin is coming off a straight sets win over Alex de Minaur that took 15 games to decide. In the victory, Kukushkin won 76 percent of his first serve points and 53 percent of his second serve points. Kukushkin is coming off a victory in which he won 68 percent of his total service points and didn’t have a single double fault. Kukushkin has had a really poor season overall, so such a clean and effortless performance has to be great for his confidence moving forward. Kukushkin looks to win at least two matches in a single tournament for just the third time in his last 10 tries. Kukushkin has split his last six matches on grass court.
These two have played eight times and Ferrer has won seven of those meetings. The most recent match was in the 2017 US Open, the only match Kukushkin has won.
Neither of these players are so hot, but Ferrer has owned the head to head and had an extra day of rest. Kukushkin has been downright awful on the main tour the last few years, and you have to think it’s only a matter of time before Ferrer snaps out of this funk.
Give me Ferrer to win this match.
