The Line: -- Over/Under:
David Goffin and Roger Federer meet in the final of the 2019 tennis Halle Open.
David Goffin is coming off a straight sets win over Matteo Berrettini that took 22 games to decide. In the victory, Goffin won 76 percent of his first serve points and 62 percent of his second serve points. Goffin won 70 percent of his total service points and converted on one of his six break points. Goffin got 61 percent of his first serves in play and saved all three of his break points. Goffin has now won eight of his last 10 matches, easily some of the most consistent tennis we’ve seen from him these past two years. Goffin looks for his first title since the 2017 Japan Open and the fifth title of his career. Goffin has lost seven of his last nine final appearances and is 0-1 in career final appearances on grass. Goffin has 15 career wins over top-10 players, with one of those wins coming this year. Goffin has won six of his last seven matches on grass court.
Roger Federer is coming off a straight sets win over Pierre-Hugues Herbert that took 18 games to decide. In the victory, Federer won 86 percent of his first serve points and 92 percent of his second serve points. Federer won 88 percent of his total service points and converted on three of his eight break points. Federer got 68 percent of his first serves in play and didn’t face a single break point. It was easily Federer’s best service performance of the tournament and is a sign he’s getting stronger as he adjusts from clay to grass. Federer looks to win his third title of the year and the 102nd title of his career. Federer has won 13 of his last 18 final appearances overall and is 18-7 in career final appearances on grass. Federer is also 9-3 in final appearances at the Halle Open. Federer has won 12 of his last 14 matches on grass court.
These two have played eight times and Federer has won seven of those matches, including the most recent in 2018 Cincinnati. Goffin’s only win over Federer came in the 2017 London playoffs. Federer won the only match on grass in the 2016 Halle Open. Four of the eight completed matches were decided in straight sets.
Goffin is a respectable player when he’s playing with confidence and hitting his spots, and this is the best we’ve seen from him in a while. With that said, Federer is Federer, and he’s owned this tournament over the last decade, and he seems to be getting stronger as this event goes along. There’s just no betting against Federer on this surface, especially given his history against Goffin.
Federer wins the Halle Open for the 10th time.
