Dayana Yastremska and Aryna Sabalenka meet in the semifinal of the 2019 tennis Internationaux de Strasbourg.
Dayana Yastremska is coming off a straight sets win over Fiona Ferro that took 16 games to decide. In the victory, Yastremska won 74 percent of her first serve points and 45 percent of her second serve points. Yastremska won 62 percent of her total service points and converted on six of her 11 break points. Yastremska got 58 percent of her first serves in play and saved seven of her nine break points. Yastremska has won all six sets this tournament and looks nothing like the player who entered this event losing six of her previous seven matches. Yastremska has her confidence back. Yastremska hopes to make her second final appearance of the year and the third final appearance of her career. Yastremska has matches on clay court.
Aryna Sabalenka is coming off a three sets win over Monica Puig that took 24 games to decide. In the victory, Sabalenka won 69 percent of her first serve points and 38 percent of her second serve points. Sabalenka won 61 percent of her total service points and converted on seven of her 14 break points. Sabalenka dominated the two sets she won and got 76 percent of her first serves in play while hitting nine aces. This is easily some of the best tennis we’ve seen this year from Sabalenka, and her serve is drastically improving with each set. Sabalenka is turning things around at the right time with the French Open rapidly approaching. Sabalenka hopes to make her second final appearance of the year and the seventh final appearance of her career. Sabalenka has won three of her last five matches on clay court.
These two have played once which was a 2017 ITF match, a meeting Yastremska won in three sets. The match took 28 games to be decided.
Both of these players entered this tournament struggling, so it’s a matter of who you have more confidence in and who can sustain this level of play. For me, I’m giving the edge to Sabalenka, as she has that feistiness about her and can really ride a wave of momentum once she catches it. Sabalenka is serving better and doing a better job of controlling the pace.
I need to see Yastremska against better competition, so this is a big test. Sabalenka makes her second final of the year.
