The Line: -- Over/Under:
Denis Shapovalov and Novak Djokovic meet in the second round of the 2019 tennis Italian Open.
Denis Shapovalov is coming off a straight sets win over Pablo Carreno-Busta that took 22 games to decide. In the victory, Shapovalov won 70 percent of his first serve points and 75 percent of his second serve points. Shapovalov won 71 percent of his total service points and converted on one of his 12 break points. Shapovalov gives himself a chance to win any match in this tournament moving forward if he’s going to serve the way he just did, which includes not facing a single break point. The issue is consistency, as Shapovalov looks to win back-to-back matches for the first time since the Miami Open. Shapovalov has two career wins over top-10 players. Shapovalov has lost three of his last four matches on clay court.
Novak Djokovic is coming off a Madrid Open title where he didn’t drop a single set and ended up winning 71 percent of his total service points in the final. After a hiccup in Indian Wells and Miami, it’s quite clear Djokovic has found his form again and looks as comfortable on clay as he has in quiet some time. Djokovic is building quite the momentum as we start turning our attention to the upcoming French Open. Djokovic hasn’t lost an opening match of a tournament since Barcelona last year. Djokovic has won seven of his last eight matches on clay court.
These two have played once, which was this year in the Australian Open, a match Djokovic won in four sets. The match took 35 games to be decided.
Shapovalov isn’t consistent enough to think he can repeat his last effort, and it takes one poor game or a couple of unforced errors for a player like Djokovic to pounce. When completely dialed in, Shapovalov can turn some heads and compete in a match like this, but we only see flashes of that player.
I like Djokovic in straight sets.
