Diego Schwartzman vs Gael Monfils
|Date & Time||Saturday October 20, 2018, 9:00 PM (EDT)|
The Line: -- Over/Under:
Argentine superstar, Diego Schwartzman, will be playing the entertaining Gael Monfils from France in the semifinals of the 2018 ATP European Open in Belgium.
Diego Schwartzman is known for his high-quality return game and showed his skills in his previous match as he broke Gilles Simon's’ serve on 6 occasions to set up a simple straight sets win. Diego Schwartzman won close to 55% of the points played during Simon’s serve which made it very hard for his opponent to establish himself in the match. This tournament seems to be a return to form event for Diego Schwartzman as he failed to win a match at his last 3 tournaments. With the Argentine playing top tennis once against, Diego Schwartzman will be very hard to beat.
On the other side of the coin, Gaël Monfils enters this match having won his last match in straight sets. It was a simple victory for Gaël Monfils as he broke his opponents serve once in both sets while winning all of his service games. Gaël Monfils has been serving exceptionally well at this tournament as he has only lost 2 service games in the entire tournament. Similar to his opponent, Gaël Monfils has also been struggling as he has also been eliminated in the opening round at his last 3 tournaments. This will be Gaël Monfils’ first major challenge in this tournament and it will be interesting to see if the Frenchman can lift his game to challenge the number 2 seed.
Diego Schwartzman and Gaël Monfils have played twice in the past with each player winning one of those matches. The most recent match was in Brazil earlier this year where Diego Schwartzman won in straight sets. Gaël Monfils’ win came in 2015 at the French Open.
This will be a close match that will be battle between Gaël Monfils’ serve and Diego Schwartzman’s return. While both players are hugely experienced and very talented, I see Diego Schwartzman winning. The Argentine has the ability to shut out the best servers in the world I see him breaking Gaël Monfils’ serve. With a hinder on his serve, I see Gaël Monfils not being good enough to win enough return games to compete. I am predicting Diego Schwartzman to win and make the final of the European Open.
