Dominic Thiem and Adrian Mannarino meet Friday in the semifinals of the 2016 Nice Open.
Dominic Thiem is coming off a straight sets win over Andreas Seppi that took 18 games to decide. Thiem has lost just nine games this tournament, and his last four victories have been decided in straight sets. Thiem continues his most successful season to date and is inching closer and closer to becoming a top-10 player in the world. Thiem is hitting his spots and the confidence is growing by each match. At just 22 years old, it’s clear Thiem is becoming a player the rest of the tour needs to watch closely, as he’s having a terrific 2016. Thiem hopes to make his fourth final appearance this season and first since the BMW Open. Thiem has won 10 of his last 14 semifinal appearances.
Adrian Mannarino is coming off a three set victory over Guido Pella that took 32 games to decide. Mannarino showed great fight in his last match and simply dominated the third set with a 6-1 score. Mannarino has looked sharp in this tournament, especially for somebody who came in losing their last six singles matches. Mannarino was just a top-30 player last season, and maybe this tournament could be the turning point to get him back on track. Mannarino hopes to reach his third career final and first since the 2015 Claro Open Colombia. Mannarino has won 10 of his last 15 semifinal appearances when you include Challenger play.
These two have played twice in the past, and Thiem has won both meetings in three sets. The two matches took place in the 2015 Paris Masters and 2015 Miami Masters. This will be the first time these two meet on clay court.
You have to respect Mannarino’s fight after the last match and his slight momentum heading into this one. However, Thiem is on a roll right now, has the head to head advantage and will be the fresher player after playing less tennis.
Thiem should win this match rather easily.
