Austrian tennis superstar, Dominic Thiem will be playing at the 2019 ATP Rogers Cup in Montreal. Dominic Thiem will play against Denis Shapovalov from Canada in the second round of the tournament.

Denis Shapovalov was solid in the opening round as he won his match in straight sets. During the win, Shapovalov received serve exceptionally well. Shapovalov won over 60% of his receiving points which allowed him to break his opponent’s serve on 4 occasions. The serving was also solid from Denis Shapovalov as he won 90% of his service games. It has been a tough few months for Denis Shapovalov as his win in the opening round was his first victory since the start of the French Open. Returning to Canada should give Shapovalov a boost but it will be tough for him as he is playing against the number 2 seed in this match.

Looking at Dominic Thiem, the Austrian received a bye in the opening round due to his high seeding. Thiem has been in outstanding form having won the Austrian Open last week. In recent months, Thiem has won the Barcelona Open and made the final of the French Open. Thiem has beaten the likes of Roger Federer, Rafael Nadal and Novak Djokovic in 2019 and he looks very confident as he enters this match. Thiem’s record on hard-court has been good as he won the Indian Wells Masters earlier in the season.

Dominic Thiem and Denis Shapovalov have played each other once in the past. The match was played in 2018 at the Mexican Open where Dominic Thiem won in straight sets.

Denis Shapovalov will receive the support of the crowd but I don’t see that being enough for the Canadian. Dominic Thiem is an elite player and he has been in supreme form in 2019. Thiem will be hoping for a strong hard-court season and I see him being good enough to defeat Denis Shapovalov in this match.
