Dominic Thiem vs Gilles Simon - 3/11/19 ATP Tour - Indian Wells Open Pick, Odds, and Prediction

Robert Deutsch-USA TODAY Sports

Austrian tennis superstar, Dominic Thiem will play against Gilles Simon from France in the third round of the 2019 ATP Indian Wells Open in California.

Dominic Thiem beat Jordan Thompson from Australia in the previous round. It was a simple victory for Dominic Thiem as he won with ease in straight sets. During the win, Thiem served exceptionally well as he won 67% of his service points which allowed him to win 91% of his service games. Thiem also managed to break Thompson serve on 3 occasions to set up a comfortable win. Dominic Thiem has been in decent form recently as he made the semifinals of the ATP Argentina Open a few weeks ago. Thiem has a 65% win rate at the Indian Wells Open which means he should be comfortable with the conditions at this event.

On the other side of the court, Gilles Simon had a much tighter second round match as he won in 3 sets. Simon lost the second set but was good enough to win the first and third sets and the match. It was a solid performance by Simon as he broke his opponent’s serve on 4 occasions while winning 93% of his service games. This will be a much tougher match for Gilles Simon and the Frenchman will have to be at his best if he wishes to compete with Dominic Thiem.

Dominic Thiem and Gilles Simon have played 10 times in the past with Thiem winning on 8 occasions and Simon winning on 2 occasions. The most recent match between these two players was in 2018 at the Paris Masters where Dominic Thiem won in straight sets.

As far as this match is concerned, I am going to pick Dominic Thiem to win. Both players are playing solid tennis but Thiem is a stronger player. The conditions at Indian Wells suit Dominic Thiem’s style of play and I see him being too strong for Gilles Simon.

Pick:
Dominic Thiem
