Dominic Thiem and Guido Pella meet in the quarterfinals of the 2019 tennis Barcelona.

Dominic Thiem is coming off a straight sets win over Jaume Munar that took 19 games to decide. In the victory, Thiem won 74 percent of his first serve points and 70 percent of his second serve points. Thiem won 72 percent of his total service points and converted on five of his 10 break points. Thiem has won all four sets this tournament and has produced a combined 11 breaks. This is looking like the Thiem we saw in Indian Wells, so his up and down season appears to be on the good side for now. Thiem hopes to make the semifinals for the second time in his last four tournaments. Thiem has split their last six matches on clay court.

Guido Pella is coming off a straight sets win over Benoit Paire that took 21 games to decide. In the victory, Pella won 68 percent of his first serve points and 76 percent of his second serve points. Pella won 70 percent of his total service points and converted on three of his eight break points. Pella has won six of his seven sets this tournament and has produced a combined 11 breaks. Pella has a chance to win four straight matches for the first time since winning the title in Sao Paulo last month. Pella has three career wins over top-10 players, none of which have come since last years Wimbledon. Pella has won 10 of his last 11 matches on clay court.

These two have split the previous four matches, with Thiem winning the last two, including the most recent last year in Buenos Aires. They’ve also split the two meetings on clay. All four meetings have been decided in straight sets.

Pella has been lights out on clay as of late and has been quite consistent this tournament as well. The problem is Thiem is the better player, and when he’s playing at the level he’s capable of, he rarely loses to lesser players. While he’s been hit or miss this season overall, Thiem is showing his good side this tournament and has cleaned up the silly errors.

Assuming Thiem stays in this form, he wins this match.

Pick:
Dominic Thiem
