The Line: -- Over/Under:
Dominic Thiem and Hubert Hurkacz meet in the second round of the 2019 tennis Miami Open.
Dominic Thiem enters this tournament coming off the biggest title of his career at Indian Wells, an event where he overpowered Roger Federer in three sets and looked absolutely dominant. Thiem has shown us flashes of being that player over these last 12 months, but now it’s a matter of sustaining that success and proving he’s truly ready to takeover as somebody who should be mentioned as a title contender in every tournament. Thiem served at a really high level in California, but it will be interesting to see how he does with these faster surfaces in Miami. Thiem is 7-4 for his career in the Miami Open and didn’t play here last year. Thiem has won his last six matches on outdoor hard court.
Hubert Hurkacz is coming off a straight sets win over Matteo Berrettini that took 19 games to decide. In the victory, Hurkacz won 72 percent of his first serve points and 59 percent of his second serve points. Hurkacz won 68 percent of his total service points and converted on all three of his break points. Hurkacz continues his most impressive stretch of his career, as he made the quarterfinals in Indian Wells and now just beat a top-60 player rather easily to advance to the second round. Hurkacz is a player worth keeping an eye on and will continue to pile up wins if he can keep getting such a high number of first serves in play. Hurkacz has two career wins over top-10 players, both coming this year over Kei Nishikori. Hurkacz has won five of his last six matches on outdoor hard court.
There’s no match history between these two players.
This should be an interesting second round considering that both guys are playing well and hitting the ball with confidence. The difference is that Thiem has everything working for him right now and has been sharper with his return. There’s also the confidence thing, as Thiem could take his game to new heights now that he finally has a big title under his belt. While some players struggle to deal with higher expectations, there’s also a bit of satisfaction that comes with it. Thiem knows he belongs here now.
I like Thiem to advance.
