Karen Khachanov vs. Dominic Thiem
|Date & Time||Thursday June 6, 2019, 8:30 AM (EDT)|
D. Thiem -350 / K. Khachanov +275
Austrian tennis player, Dominic Thiem has made it into the quarterfinals of the 2019 ATP French Open in Paris. At this stage of the event, Thiem will be competing against Karen Khachanov from Russia. Thiem and Khachanov are both very accomplished and talented players so this is expected to be an excellent tennis match.
Dominic Thiem made the final of the French Open last season and his excellent record at Roland Garros has continued this season. In his previous round, Dominic Thiem played against Gael Monfils whom he defeated in straight sets. During the victory, Thiem served exceptionally well as he won 73% of his service points. Dominic Thiem won 93% of his service games and 36% of his return games to secure a very solid win. It has been a very strong few months for Dominic Thiem as he won the ATP Barcelona Open prior to arriving in Paris. In Barcelona, Thiem also defeated Rafael Nadal which is a very notable accomplishment when playing a clay tournament. Thiem looks in good form and has a good record at the French Open so I am expecting the Austrian to be a very tough player to defeat.
Karen Khachanov, on the other hand, had a very big win in the previous round as he defeated Juan Martin Del Potro in 4 sets. It was a major win for Khachanov and it showed his ability as a clay court player. During the win, Karen Khachanov won 90% of his service games and 4 return games. Unlike Thiem, Khachanov has not been at his best in recent weeks as this is the first quarterfinal appearance the Russian has made since the Indian Wells Masters. While form seems to be back with Khachanov, it will be tough for him to beat Thiem on clay.
Dominic Thiem and Karen Khachanov have played each other once in the past. The match was played in 2018 at the Paris Masters where Karen Khachanov won in straight sets.
Both Karen Khachanov and Dominic Thiem have been playing well and will be confident in their ability to produce a win. My prediction for this match is Dominic Thiem. While Khachanov is playing very well, the Russian is best suited to hard courts and has not had much prior success on clay. Thiem is exceptional on clay and I see him being too strong for Khachanov in this match.
