Dominic Thiem and Novak Djokovic meet Tuesday afternoon in the fourth round of the Miami Masters.
Dominic Thiem is coming off a straight sets win over Yoshihito Nishioka, which was decided in just 16 games. Thiem has won nine of his last 10 singles matches and has caught fire in 2016, which includes titles at the Argentina Open and Abierto Mexicano Telcel. Thiem’s 13th ranking a few weeks ago was the highest he’s ever been in his career, and he’s clearly showing he’s a force to be reckoned with at just 22 years old. Thiem has three victories over top-10 players under his belt, but all of those wins have come on clay court. Thiem made the quarterfinals of the Miami Masters last year, his only quarterfinal appearance in the ATP World Tour Masters 1000.
Novak Djokovic is coming off a straight sets win over Joao Sousa and has won his last 10 singles matches. Joao Sousa has dropped just 11 games in his first two matches this tournament and has lost just one singles match this season overall. There’s really not much more you can say about Djokovic that hasn’t already been said, as the guy continues to play flawless tennis and needs to help his opponent to have any shot at losing. Djokovic continues to be on another level. Djokovic has won the Miami Masters in four of the last five years and has been bounced before the quarterfinals four times.
These two have played once in the mast, which was a straight sets win by Djokovic in the 2014 Shanghai Masters. This will obviously be the second time these two meet on hard court.
Thiem is a rising star who has the talent to compete with Djokovic for a set or so, but you’d be a fool to bet against the top player in the world. Djokovic is as close to a lock on the tennis court as you’re going to find in sports right now.
