Dominic Thiem and Novak Djokovic meet in the third round of the 2018 tennis Monte Carlo Masters.

Dominic Thiem is coming off a three sets win over Andrey Rublev that took 36 games to decide. In the victory, Thiem won 68 percent of his first serve points and 61 percent of his second serve points. Thiem managed to in his match after dropping the first set and being broken three times. Thiem showed great fight in his second round victory and managed to win 40 percent of his return points. Thiem is off to a strong start this season, but his next step is improving his luck in big tournaments, as he has very little success son the big stage. Thiem hopes to make the quarterfinals of the Monte Carlo Masters for the first time. Thiem has won seven of his last eight matches on clay court.

Novak Djokovic is coming off a straight sets win over Borna Coric that took 25 games to decide. In the victory, Djokovic won 67 percent of his first serve points and 58 percent of his second serve points. Djokovic got 66 percent of his first serves in play and managed to break a quality young player four times. Djokovic still has improvement to do given his standards, but he’s now won four straight sets, and you can see the confidence starting to build. The serve will pick up eventually, but Djokovic is dangerous as long as he’s getting his return in play and able to play high quality defense with no errors. Djokovic has been bounced before the quarterfinals of the Monte Carlo Masters just three times in his career. Djokovic has won six of his last seven matches on clay court.

These two have played six times and Djokovic has won five of those meetings. The most recent match was in the 2017 French Open, a match Thiem won in straight sets. Before that, Djokovic owned this series.

Djokovic is showing signs of returning to form, as he’s played to quality matches and is being effective with his return. Thiem doesn’t play his best on the big stage very often, and besides the most recent match, he’s had zero success against a healthy Djokovic.

I like Djokovic to get another victory.

Novak Djokovic
