The Line: -- Over/Under:
Dominic Thiem and Rafael Nadal meet in the quarterfinals of the 2018 tennis Madrid Masters.
Dominic Thiem is coming off a three sets win over Borna Coric that took 31 games to decide. In the victory, Thiem won 68 percent of his first serve points and 56 percent of his second serve points. Thiem dug deep to win his most recent match after losing the first set and winning a second set tiebreak. Thiem was able to come away with all of the big points in the final two sets and really grind out a victory. Thiem has now won back-to-back tight three set matches, and it’s fair to question how much he has left in the tank right now. Thiem has lost each of his last four quarterfinal appearances. Thiem hopes to make the semifinal of a ATP World Tour Masters 1000 for the third time in his career. Thiem has won six of his last eight matches on clay court.
Rafael Nadal is coming off a straight sets win over Diego Sebastian Schwartzman that took 19 games to decide. In the victory, Nadal won 66 percent of his first serve points and 74 percent of his second serve points. Nadal continues to serve at an elite level, as he got 70 percent of his first serves in play and was broken just once against a quality returner. Nadal has now won 24 straight sets and hasn’t come close to losing a match since the Australian Open. We’re running out of things to say about Nadal honestly, as the guy is just on another planet with the way he’s played the last couple of months. Nadal has won five of his last seven quarterfinal appearances. Nadal has made the semifinals of a Masters 1000 in five of his last nine appearances. Nadal hopes to make the semifinals of the Madrid Masters for the sixth straight year. Nadal has won 19 straight matches on clay court.
These two have played eight times and Nadal has won six of those meetings. The most recent match was in this years Monte Carlo Masters, a match Nadal won in 14 games. However, Thiem does have two wins over Nadal on clay, with the most recent coming in the 2017 Rome Masters.
Thiem has a ton of experience against Nadal on clay and has two wins over him on his surface. However, there’s no betting against Nadal in his current form, as I’ve said many times these last few weeks. Also, the last match between these two a couple of weeks ago was ugly and quick.
Nadal rolls yet again.
