The Line: -- Over/Under:
Austrian tennis superstar, Dominic Thiem is set to play at the 2019 ATP China Open. Dominic Thiem will begin his tournament against Richard Gasquet from France.
Richard Gasquet last played at the Moselle Open where he was eliminated by Benoit Paire in the second round. Considering his supreme record at the Moselle Open, Gasquet will be disappointed by his results. It has been a decent few months for Richard Gasquet as he made the semifinal at the Cincinnati Masters. Gasquet has a good record in Asia but this is expected to be a tough match for the Frenchman as he is playing against the top seed.
Looking at Dominic Thiem, the Austrian superstar last took the court the Laver Cup. It was a modest Laver Cup for Thiem as he defeated Shapovalov but was beaten by Taylor Fritz. Following the Austrian Open which he won, Dominic Thiem has struggled as he was eliminated in the opening round of the US Open. Thiem seems to lack confidence on hard courts although he has shown his ability in the past as he has had good results at tournaments like the US Open. This is a potentially tricky match for Dominic Thiem as he is playing against a very accomplished player in Richard Gasquet.
Dominic Thiem and Richard Gasquet have played each other twice in the past. Both prior matches have been won by Richard Gasquet. The most recent match between these two players was in 2017 at Vienna where Gasquet won in 3 sets.
Taking everything into consideration, I am going to predict an upset and pick Richard Gasquet to win this match. Gasquet has been in better form over the past few months and he is playing with more confidence. To make matters better for the Frenchman, Gasquet has an outstanding record against Thiem and should have the momentum entering this match. This should be a close match but I see Richard Gasquet having enough to defeat Dominic Thiem.
