Austrian tennis superstar, Dominic Thiem has made it into the final of the 2019 ATP China Open in Beijing. Dominic Thiem will battle against Stefanos Tsitsipas from Greece for a spot in the final.
Dominic Thiem enters this match having defeated Karen Khachanov in 3 sets in the previous round. It was a tough match for Thiem as he lost the opening set but the Austrian found some form in the second set which allowed him to win the final 2 sets and the match. The receiving was very strong from Dominic Thiem as he won 44% of his receiving points which allowed him to break Karen Khachanov’s serve 5 times. While the receiving impressed, Dominic Thiem had issues with his serving as he only won 63% of his service games. Thiem is an exceptional player but if he wishes to win this match he must improve his serving.
On the other side of the coin, Stefanos Tsitsipas was outstanding in the previous round as he defeated Alexander Zverev in straight sets. It was an impressive display by Tsitsipas as the Greek superstar won 73% of his service games and 4 return games. It has been an outstanding tournament for Tsitsipas as he has beaten the likes of John Isner and has looked very controlled in every match he has played. This is expected to be a big test for Stefanos Tsitsipas but having just beaten Zverev, the Greek superstar should be very optimistic.
Stefanos Tsitsipas and Dominic Thiem have played each other 5 times in the past. Thiem has won on 3 occasions while Tsitsipas has won twice. All of the prior matches took place in 2018 with the most recent being at the Rogers Cup where Stefanos Tsitsipas won in straight sets. Theim has a 2-1 record against Tsitsipas on hard courts.
Looking at all the information, I am going to pick Stefanos Tsitsipas to win this match. This was a tough match to predict but I see Tsitsipas playing with more composure. Thiem looked frantic at times against Khachanov and the Austrian will feel lucky to have won the previous fixture. Tsitsipas looked in total control against Zverev and is playing with much more confidence than Thiem. It should be a close match but I see Stefanos Tsitsipas winning the contest and the ATP China Open title.
