Tennis | Steve Johnson vs Dominic Thiem
Geoff Burke-USA TODAY Sports

The number 9 seed, Dominic Thiem has made it to the second round of the 2018 US Open. The Austrian superstar won his first round match with ease and will now face Steve Johnson from the United States. Both these players are hugely experienced and very talented so we should be entertained to a great tennis match. These two have met three times before with Thiem winning twice and Johnson winning once. This statistic shows that we should expect a very close tennis match.

Dominic Thiem looked fit and healthy in his opening round match. The Austrian superstar has been struggling with injury over the past few months but those problems looked behind him as he won his opening round match in straight sets. The world number 9 has not been playing much tennis recently and that easy win was a good way for Dominic Thiem to ease his way back into the tennis circuit. The Austrian has never made it past the fourth round at Flushing Meadows and he will be determined to make it further this year.

Looking at the opponent, Steve Johnson enters this tournament in good form. The American came second at the Winston-Salem Open last week and is playing some great tennis. That being said, this will be an entirely different situation than that at the Winston-Salem Open since the US Open is a much harder tournament. Steve Johnson has only made it past the second round of the US Open once before which was in 2012. This means that this match is a huge obstacle for the American and it will be interesting to see how he handles it.

I am picking Dominic Thiem to win. The Austrian is the better player and now that he is fit again, he will be hard to beat. I am expecting Steve Johnson to fight hard but that won’t be enough against the world number 9.
