Donna Vekic and Petra Martic meet in the third round of the 2019 tennis Madrid Open.

Donna Vekic is coming off a straight sets win over Kristyna Pliskova that took 20 games to decide. In the victory, Vekic won 74 percent of her first serve points and 46 percent of her second serve points. Vekic won 63 percent of her total service points and converted on four of her five break points. Vekic has been highly effective with her first serve and has even sprinkled in four aces. Each of Vekic’s last eight wins have been decided in straight sets. Vekic has a chance to win three straight matches for the first time since Acapulco. Vekic has won four of her last five matches on clay court.

Petra Martic had the privilege of not having to play a second round match due to Angelique Kerber withdrawing due to a right ankle injury. Martic now has a rest advantage on top of her impressive clay stretch that includes beating Garbine Muguruza in the first round in straight sets. In that match, Martic got 70 percent of her first serves in play, saved eight of her 10 break points and dominated a second set tiebreak to close the deal. While these wins have kind of come out of nowhere, Martic is not a player to overlook at this stage of the tournament. Martic has a chance to win at least three matches for the third straight tournament. Martic has won 11 of her last 12 matches on clay court.

There’s no match history between these two players.

It’s tough to find a player who has been as impressive on clay so far this season than Martic, as she’s won 11 of her last 12 matches, which includes a title in Istanbul. It doesn’t hurt that Martic now has a rest advantage after not having to play against Kerber. This feels like a tough scheduling spot for Vekic.

I’m going to ride the hot hand here and back Martic to the quarterfinals.
