Ekaterina Makarova and Julia Goerges meet in the final of the 2017 Citi Open.

Ekaterina Makarova is coming off a three sets win over Oceane Dodin that took 28 games to decide. In the victory, Makarova won 73 percent of her first serve points and 55 percent of her second serve points. Makarova showed great fight in her last match, as she came back after dropping the first set and managed to win 67 percent of her total service points. Makarova has come away with the biggest points in each match throughout the tournament and seems to get stronger the longer the match goes. Makarova looks for her third career title and the first since the 2014 Thailand Open. Makarova is 1-0 in final appearances on hard court. Makarova has won five of her last six matches on hard court.

Julia Goerges is coming off a three sets win over Andrea Petkovic that took 24 games to decide. In the victory, Goerges won 77 percent of her first serve points and 45 percent of her second serve points. Goerges has now won two matches this tournament after dropping the first set, and she’s coming off a match in which she won 41 percent of her total return points. Goerges has been really impressive on hard court this season and gets her third shot at a title this year. Goerges gives herself a shot if she continues to return at a high percentage. Goerges looks for her third career singles title and first since the 2011 Porsche Tennis Grand Prix. Goerges is 0-4 in final appearances on hard court. Goerges has won six of her last seven matches on hard court.

These two have met once, which was in the 2015 Australian Open, a match Makarova won in straight sets. The match took 17 games to decide.

This is a match that could go the distance and feels like a toss-up. However, Makarova has been the more impressive player this tournament with wins over Monica Puig and Simona Halep. That has to count for something. Also, Goerges hasn’t had much success in final appearances and is 0-5 in her last trips.

This could go either way, but I’m leaning Makarova.
