Kontaveit vs. Svitolina

The Line: -- Over/Under:
Elina Svitolina and Anett Kontaveit meet in the semifinals of the 2018 tennis Rome Masters.
Elina Svitolina is coming off a straight sets win over Angelique Kerber that took 20 games to decide. In the victory, Svitolina won 65 percent of her first serve points and 45 percent of her second serve points. Svitolina managed to cruise in straight sets despite not serving well, as she won 47 percent of her return points and produced five breaks. Svitolina has now broken her opponents a combined 15 times in this tournament and that’s allowed her to get by with pretty much nothing on her second serve. However, if Svitolina hopes to make a serious run at a title, she must be more consistent with her serve, as she can’t rely on her return to bail her out every match. Svitolina has won each of her last seven semifinal appearances. Svitolina hopes to make her third final appearance of the year and fourth career final appearance in a Premier 5 Tournament. Svitolina has won 10 of her last 12 matches on clay court.
Anett Kontaveit is coming off a straight sets win over Caroline Wozniacki that took 16 games to decide. In the victory, Kontaveit won 58 percent of her first serve points and 65 percent of her second serve points. Kontaveit made light work with what looked like a tired Wozniacki, as she won 60 percent of her return points and gave herself 13 break chances. Kontaveit has been very aggressive with her return recently and has produced 18 breaks in her last four matches. At 22 years old, Kontaveit is on the cusp of reaching her biggest final of her career and having her breakthrough moment. Kontaveit has won four of her last five semifinal appearances. Kontaveit hopes to make her first final since the 2017 Ladies Championship Gstaad and her first final appearance in a Premier 5 Tournament. Kontaveit has won six of her last seven matches on clay court.
This will be the first match between these two players.
Kontaveit has now beaten back-to-back top-10 players, so you can’t overlook her in this match. However, Svitolina has much more big match experience and has been highly successful with her return. Kontaveit must take her game to another level if she hopes to get past Svitolina in her current form. I’m just not ready to buy into Kontaveit’s run just yet and think she got lucky with Wozniacki on a quick turnaround after playing such a lengthy three set match.
I like Svitolina to reach the final.
