The Line: -- Over/Under:
Elina Svitolina and Carla Suarez-Navarro meet in the quarterfinals of the 2019 tennis Dubai.
Elina Svitolina is coming off a straight sets win over Garbine Muguruza that took 15 games to decide. In the victory, Svitolina won 65 percent of her first serve points and 70 percent of her second serve points. Svitolina won 67 percent of her total service points and covered on five of her eight break points. Svitolina completely dominated with her return game and won six of the final seven games to close the victory. Svitolina has now won 13 of her last 16 matches overall, so she’s got to be feeling good with where he game is at currently. Svitolina has won eight of her last 10 matches on outdoor hard court.
Carla Suarez-Navarro is coming off a straight sets win over Kristina Mladenovic that took 24 games to decide. In the victory, Suarez-Navarro won 65 percent of her first serve points and 35 percent of her second serve points. Suarez-Navarro won 53 percent of her total service points and converted on seven of her 13 break points. Suarez-Navarro has won all six sets this tournament, but she has to be better with her serve if she’s going to advance any further, as she’s been broken a combined eight times in her last two matches. Suarez-Navarro has 28 career wins over top-10 players and four of those wins came last year. Suarez-Navarro has won five of her last seven matches on outdoor hard court.
These two have played seven times and Suarez-Navarro has won four of those matches. The most recent meeting was in the 2018 Madrid Masters, a match Suarez-Navarro won in three sets. Svitolina’s last win over Suarez-Navarro came in Brisbane of 2017, and she’s 3-2 against her on hard court.
Svitolina has the edge over Suarez-Navarro on hard court, which includes winning three of the last four matches on the surface, and she enters this match in much better form. Suarez-Navarro has zero chance of winning this match unless she drastically improves her serve from her previous two performances. Svitolina is playing so well that she won’t give back those break opportunities.
I like Svitolina to reach the semifinals.
