Elina Svitolina and Elise Mertens meet in the second round of the 2019 tennis Cincinnati Open.

Elina Svitolina is coming off a quarterfinal trip in Toronto and has won eight of her last 11 matches overall. Svitolina is enjoying her best stretch of the year after some serious struggles, but she’s coming off a match where she won just 56 percent of her total service points and had four double faults. Svitolina is  different player when she’s getting hr first serves in play, and she’s made at least the quarterfinals in three of her five career appearances in Cincinnati. Svitolina has lost her opening match five times since Miami. Svitolina has won three of her last five matches on hard court.

Elise Mertens is coming off a straight sets win over Caty McNally that took 18 games to decide. In the victory, Mertens won 67 percent of her first serve points and 52 percent of her second serve points. Mertens won 61 percent of her total service points and converted on five of her eight break points. Mertens got 63 percent of her first serves in play and saved two of her three break points. Seven of Mertens’ last 10 victories have been decided in straight sets. Mertens looks to win two straight wins for the first time since Wimbledon. Mertens has six career wins over top-10 players with three of those wins coming this year. Mertens has split her last four matches on hard court.

These two have played three times and Svitolina has won two of those matches, including the most recent in 2018 Montreal. All three matches were decided in straight sets.

Svitolina has had great success in Cincinnati over her career and she’s currently playing her best tennis of the season. Mertens has improved against top-10 players this year, but she can still struggle big time with her serve and her game isn’t blowing anybody off the court. As long as Svitolina plays within herself and gets her first serve in play, she cruises in this match.

Svitolina advances to the next round in Cincy.
