Larsson vs. Svitolina
|Date & Time||Friday August 26, 2016, 9:00 PM (EDT)|
The Line: Over/Under:
Elina Svitolina and Johanna Larsson meet Friday in the semifinals of the Connecticut Open on ESPN2.
Elina Svitolina is coming off a straight sets win over Elena Vesnina that took 16 games to decide. Svitolina has dropped just one set this tournament and has lost a combined eight games in her last two matches. Svitolina is hitting the ball with confidence, making very little unforced errors and is quietly climbing up the rankings of becoming a top-20 player again. Svitolina is in good form and has a shot at the title if she can improve her second serve. Svitolina has lost four of her last five semifinal appearances and hopes to make her fifth career final. Svitolina has won six of her last eight matches on hard court.
Johanna Larsson is coming off a straight sets win over Roberta Vinci that took 20 games to decide. Larsson is making the most of her appearance here with easy victories over a top-10 player and Shelby Rogers in the earlier round. Larsson has now won six of her last eight matches when you include qualifying, and her clean tennis has been rather impressive this tournament. Larsson has always had the talent to compete for titles, but her confidence has to stay strong and she must limit her unforced errors. Larsson has lost five of her last seven semifinal appearances and looks to make her fifth final appearance of her career. Larsson has won five of her last six matches on hard court.
This will be the first time these two meet on the tennis court.
Larsson has to be confident after just beating a top-10 player, but it’s going to be tough to get up for Svitolina on a quick turnaround. Svitolina is well rested, more experienced and has the defense that will give the Swede issues.
Should be a fun semifinals match, but I have Svitolina advancing to the final.
